Encaustic Wall Art with Mexican Amate Bark by Lisa Hoonan

Encaustic art utilizes heat to melt wax and varnish which is then pigmented and layered over and over again. This process creates incredible depth and textures while maintaining subtle colors. This techniques dates back to ancient Greece where it was used to waterproof ships. It quickly became the way to decorate warships and then was taken up by artists to create their own works. 

This piece by Lisa Hoonan starts with a base sheet of Amate Bark Paper and layers on the wax and varnish. If you look closely, you will see the texture and design of the Amate Bark base sheet.
