Heavyweight Natural Gampi Paper

Gampi is one Asia's main fiber sources for traditional paper-making and has been used since nearly the 8th century AD. It is notoriously difficult to harvest and produce; consequently, Gampi is generally a less common and more sought-after variety of washi and Philippine paper.

After the natrually-growing crop is harvested in the early spring, the fine fibers must undergo an intensive and time-consuming refining process called chiritori where paper-makers pick through the pulp by hand to remove chiri (dust and dirt) and other impurities from the high-quality Gampi fibers.

The plant’s long and supple inner fibers make Gampi an ideal fiber source for creating high-quality paper with noteworthy durability. Some of Gampi's distinguishing features are its natural shine and resiliency to water. For that reason, artists and creators of all disciplines use this unique washi paper for bookmaking, block printing, watercolor, encaustic art, and invitations.
